A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, inthe Church of the Sacred Hearts, Malden, for Carmelo Consolo ofMalden, a retired laborer and painter and former prize fighter.
Mr. Consolo died Thursday in Mt. Auburn Hospital, Cambridge,after a brief illness. He was 63.
Mr. Consolo was born in Boston and lived in the West End ofthe city for several years before moving to Malden. He was anamateur Golden Gloves boxer in the late 1930s and early 1940s,fighting under the name Tommy Greb.
He was the Diamond Bell champion and the New England AmateurAthletic Union champion in 1939 and 1940. He became a professionalboxer in 1941 and was the New England lightweight champion in 1946and 1947. He retired in 1952, after fighting in more than 200 bouts.
Mr. Consolo later became a self-employed laborer and painter.
He was a member of Ring 4 of Cambridge and was a West EndHouse alumni.
Mr. Consolo leaves his wife, Rita (Palmer); four sons, Frankand John Consolo, both of Malden, Patrick Consolo of Everett andJohn Varone of Malden; two daughters, Maria Phillips and DawnVarone, both of Malden; three brothers, John and Guy, both ofMalden, and Frank Consolo of Whitman; two sisters, Nina Alessi andJosephine Terravecchia, both of Wakefield; 5 grandchildren andseveral nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. IUDICA;09/11
